AFTERTREATMENT4

DPF

An exhaust aftertreatment component that traps particulate matter from diesel combustion and requires monitored regeneration and ash management.

EGR

A system that recirculates controlled exhaust gas to influence combustion temperature and emissions. It interacts with airflow measurement, boost, temperature and aftertreatment.

GPF / OPF

A particulate filter used on gasoline or petrol engines, particularly direct-injection applications. Monitoring and regeneration strategies are platform-specific.

SCR

Selective catalytic reduction uses a reductant such as diesel exhaust fluid to reduce nitrogen oxides in suitable exhaust conditions. Dosing, temperature, NOx sensing and catalyst state are interdependent.

AIR PATH5

Boost pressure

Pressure above ambient produced in the intake path by a turbocharger or supercharger. Professional analysis distinguishes absolute pressure, gauge pressure, requested pressure and measured pressure.

Intercooler

A heat exchanger that reduces compressed intake-air temperature. Pressure drop, heat rejection and airflow influence charge density and knock or thermal margins.

Throttle closure

A commanded reduction in throttle opening used to control torque, protect components, manage shifts or maintain stability. It is not always evidence of a throttle fault.

VGT

A turbocharger using adjustable turbine vanes to influence response and flow. Command, position feedback, exhaust pressure and actuator condition all affect control.

Wastegate

A valve that regulates turbine flow and therefore turbocharger operation. It may be pneumatic or electronic and can use position feedback.

COMBUSTION5

AFR

Air-fuel ratio describes the mass relationship between air and fuel entering combustion. The meaningful target depends on fuel, engine type, load, temperature, catalyst strategy and whether lambda or mass ratio is being discussed.

Ignition timing

The commanded spark event relative to piston position in a spark-ignition engine. Knock, fuel octane, charge temperature, combustion speed and component protection constrain the safe target.

Injection timing

The timing of one or more fuel-injection events. It affects combustion phasing, pressure rise, noise, efficiency, temperature and emissions.

Knock correction

An ECU response that reduces ignition advance when knock-related signals exceed modeled thresholds. Interpretation requires cylinder, load, fuel and sensor context.

Lambda

A normalized mixture value comparing the operating air-fuel ratio with the stoichiometric requirement of the fuel. Lambda 1 is stoichiometric; interpretation above or below depends on combustion type and operating state.

COMMUNICATION3

CAN bus

A robust serial vehicle network used by control units to exchange messages. Diagnosis considers network topology, power, grounds, terminating resistance and which modules remain online.

DoIP

A diagnostic communication method using IP networking, commonly over automotive Ethernet. Vehicle and tool support remains platform-specific.

UDS

A standardized diagnostic-services framework used over supported vehicle communication networks. OEM implementations define identifiers, security and programming routines.

CONTROL STRATEGY1

Adaptation

A learned correction used by a control unit to compensate for manufacturing variation, wear or operating conditions. Resetting adaptations without diagnosis can remove useful evidence.

CONTROL UNITS2

ECU

The electronic control unit that coordinates engine torque, air, fuel, ignition or injection, protection, diagnostics and communication with other vehicle modules.

TCU

The controller that manages automatic or automated transmission functions such as clutch or pressure control, shift scheduling, torque handover and protection.

DIAGNOSTICS4

CVN

A value used by some diagnostic and regulatory systems to identify or verify calibration-related content. Its implementation and interpretation are manufacturer- and platform-specific.

DTC

A diagnostic trouble code records that a monitored condition met defined fault criteria. It identifies a diagnostic path, not necessarily a failed component.

DTC freeze frame

A stored snapshot of selected operating values captured when a diagnostic condition set. It helps reconstruct load, temperature, speed and other enabling conditions.

Limp mode

A protective operating state that limits torque, speed or functionality after a monitored fault. The correct response is to diagnose the triggering condition, not merely clear the symptom.

FUEL SYSTEM1

Rail pressure

Fuel pressure maintained in a shared high-pressure rail. Requested and measured pressure, pump capability, injector flow and temperature must be considered together.

IDENTIFICATION2

Hardware number

An identifier for the physical control-unit design or revision. It is one part of compatibility and must be considered with software and vehicle configuration.

Software number

An identifier for installed control-unit software. OEM updates and variants can make family-level matches insufficient.

MEMORY2

EEPROM

Non-volatile memory commonly used for configuration, adaptation or security-related data. Its exact purpose and layout depend on the control unit.

Also used: electrically erasable programmable read-only memory

Flash memory

Non-volatile memory that can store program code, calibration and other data. Full and partial reads can expose different regions of the flash structure.

PROCESSOR1

Tricore

A microcontroller architecture used in many automotive control units. Knowing the processor family does not replace exact ECU hardware and software identification.

PROGRAMMING10

Bench mode

Direct connection to a control unit through its external connector, without opening the case on supported protocols. Available read, write and cloning functions vary by ECU and tool.

Boot mode

A board-level access method that generally requires opening the control unit and placing the processor or memory system into a supported boot state.

Calibration file

Digital control-unit data containing calibration and, depending on read type, program or configuration regions. File identity and structure must match the target control unit and programming workflow.

Checksum

An integrity calculation used by control-unit software to detect unexpected data changes in defined memory regions. A valid checksum does not prove that the calibration is safe or appropriate.

ECU clone

A controlled transfer of compatible program, calibration, configuration or security-related data from an original unit to a verified replacement. Legitimate ownership and hardware compatibility are essential.

Full read

A read intended to capture the complete memory scope supported by a protocol, potentially including program, calibration and additional data. 'Full' remains tool- and ECU-specific.

OBD

On-board diagnostics is the vehicle system and interface used for standardized and manufacturer-specific diagnostics. Tuning tools can also use supported OBD protocols for reading or writing without removing the ECU.

Partial read

A read containing only selected memory regions, commonly calibration data. It may be suitable for routine work but is not necessarily a complete recovery backup.

Recovery file

Verified data retained to restore a control unit after an interrupted or incompatible programming event. Required scope depends on ECU and protocol.

Virtual read

A tool-supplied original file retrieved from an identification rather than physically read in full from the installed ECU. It must match the exact software identity.

SECURITY1

Immobilizer

A vehicle anti-theft system that authorizes starting through coordinated identifiers or cryptographic data. Service work requires legitimate ownership and platform-specific procedures.

SENSORS4

EGT

Measured or modeled exhaust-gas temperature used for component protection, turbocharger operation and aftertreatment control.

Also used: exhaust gas temperature

MAF sensor

A sensor that measures or estimates intake air mass. Its signal can support load calculation, fueling, EGR diagnosis and torque modelling depending on the platform.

Also used: mass air flow · air-mass meter

MAP sensor

A sensor reporting absolute pressure in the intake manifold or charge path. Diagnostic interpretation should account for atmospheric pressure, sensor scaling and engine state.

NOx sensor

An exhaust sensor and electronic module used to measure nitrogen-oxide concentration for control and diagnostics. Supply, communication, warm-up and plausibility should be checked before replacement.

TORQUE CONTROL4

Driver wish

Calibration that translates accelerator-pedal and operating conditions into a requested torque or load. It is one input to the torque system, not a direct command for unlimited engine output.

Torque intervention

A temporary request to reduce or shape engine torque, commonly from the transmission, stability system or component protection during a defined event.

Also used: torque reduction request

Torque limiter

One or more calibrated constraints that cap requested or delivered torque according to speed, gear, temperature, component protection or other operating states.

Torque monitoring

Control and diagnostic functions that compare requested, modeled and delivered torque for plausibility and safety. Disabling monitoring is not a substitute for a coherent torque model.

TRANSMISSION2

Clutch adaptation

Learned control values used by a transmission controller to manage clutch engagement. Out-of-range values can indicate wear or hydraulic/mechanical problems.

Torque converter lock-up

A clutch function that reduces slip through an automatic transmission torque converter under suitable conditions. Control considers load, speed, temperature and shift quality.

VALIDATION2

Datalog

A time-based recording of selected control-unit channels. A useful log includes the operating condition, correct sample rate, relevant requested/actual values and enough context to reproduce the event.

Dyno

Equipment used to apply load and measure vehicle or engine output under controlled conditions. Repeatability, correction method, cooling and operator procedure influence results.

VEHICLE CONTROL3

Launch control

A controlled-start strategy that can coordinate engine speed, torque, boost, clutch and traction states on compatible powertrains.

Rev limiter

A strategy that prevents engine speed exceeding a defined boundary using fuel, ignition, throttle or combined interventions. The limit reflects mechanical and control constraints.

Vmax

A calibrated or configured maximum vehicle-speed strategy. Tyres, gearing, cooling, braking, legal limits and the operating environment constrain any change.
