It evaluates sensor data, operating requests and protection conditions, then drives actuators according to software and calibration. Modern systems often use torque as the common language between the engine, transmission and stability systems.
Hardware family is not file identity
Two ECUs sharing a family name can contain different hardware, software and vehicle configuration. Complete identification and the original read remain essential.
