Stabilize the situation

Do not cycle power repeatedly unless the tool procedure requires it. Maintain or safely disconnect regulated power according to the documented recovery sequence and record whether communication remains available.

Write down the tool, protocol, file, progress percentage, error text and vehicle behaviour. Save screenshots and complete logs before closing the software.

Identify what was written

Determine whether the operation targeted calibration, program, EEPROM or a full memory image. Confirm whether the file was original, virtual, modified or patched and whether checksum was handled by the file or tool.

Compare the failed-write file with the preserved original and ECU identification. An incorrect recovery file can create a more difficult state than the interrupted write itself.

Choose the recovery path

If the ECU still communicates through the diagnostic connector, the tool may offer a documented OBD recovery. Bench access can provide stable direct communication, while boot mode may be required for processor-level recovery.

Never guess a pinout or processor connection. Use current tool documentation, ESD control and stable power, and preserve full backup areas whenever the protocol allows.

Build a useful recovery request

Send label photographs, vehicle and ECU ID, original and attempted files, tool log, read/write method, voltage history and current communication state. State whether another control unit has been replaced or cloned.
