OBD and virtual reading
OBD is convenient when the ECU, protocol and software support it. A virtual read may retrieve a matching original from a verified server rather than extracting every memory area from the control unit.
Always preserve the identification result and confirm that the virtual file matches the vehicle software before modification.
Bench mode
Bench communication accesses the ECU through its connector outside normal vehicle communication. It can expose more memory and recovery options without opening the housing, but pinout and power sequencing must be correct.
Boot mode
Boot access can provide deep recovery and full memory access, but the ECU is opened and connected at board level. ESD control, stable power, correct pinout and a verified backup are essential.
A professional decision
Check tool documentation, ECU hardware, protection level and recovery procedure before connecting. “Supported” is not the same as “risk free”; the technician owns the physical reading process.
