Speedometer, tyre & gear-ratio calibration

Displayed speed and distance can depend on wheel-speed sensors, tyre circumference, final drive, instrument cluster, ABS/ESC and transmission coding. The engine ECU may not be the only or correct module to change.

WHAT THIS WORKFLOW PROVIDES

Controlled from identification to delivery.

Measured error baseline
Correct controlling-module identification
ABS/ESC interaction awareness
Post-change speed validation
Compliance requirement

Displayed speed and odometer changes must comply with local law and must never be used to falsify vehicle mileage.

Measure before changing

Record actual tyre size, rolling circumference, final drive, transmission and verified speed error. Tyre label dimensions alone do not capture load and wear.

Find the authoritative module

Depending on the platform, configuration may reside in the ABS, body module, cluster, TCU or central vehicle coding rather than the ECU calibration.

Retain safety functions

Speed display, stability control and legal tolerance requirements must be respected. Validate with approved measurement equipment.

FREQUENTLY ASKED

Before you submit.

Is speedometer correction always inside the engine ECU?+

No. Many vehicles derive and configure speed through ABS, cluster, body or transmission modules.
